Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point font (Times New Roman or Arial); employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to APA 7th edition stylistic and bibliographic requirements as outlined in the Author Guidelines.
  • Multi-media submissions photo imagery adheres to the requirements as outlined in the Author Guidelines.
  • For accessibility purposes, all image files must be accompanied with alt-text clearly labeled for each image.

Author Guidelines

  • Guidelines for submitting an abstract for a manuscript

To be considered, written abstracts can be up to 500 words (not including references). Please adhere to the APA (7th edition) style. Feel free to include any notes to the editors in the journal platform when submitting.

  • Guidelines for submitting an abstract for an visual essay

To be considered, visual essay abstracts can be up to 500 words (not including references) with thumbnail images and links to video content. Please adhere to the APA (7th edition) style. Feel free to include any notes to the editors in the journal platform when submitting.

  • Guidelines for submitting a full manuscript

To be considered, written manuscripts up to 6000 words in length, not including references (with all identifiers removed) prepared according to the APA (7th edition) style with an abstract of 150 words. Thumbnail images are encouraged inserted into the manuscript. If accepted, images will be requested in high resolution (300 dpi) digital format (jpg or png). A description of the images for those who use screen readers (Alt text), image captions are required, and copyright permission must be secured by author. 

  • Guidelines for submitting a full visual essay

Submission should be accompanied by a text of up to 6000 words (with all identifiers removed) prepared according to the APA (7th edition) style to include a 150-word abstract. Thumbnail images should be inserted into the manuscript to indicate placement in text. If accepted, images will be requested in high resolution (300 dpi) digital format (jpg or png). A description of the images for those who use screen readers (Alt text), image captions are required, and copyright permission must be secured by author.

For all submissions:   

  • Accompanying ALL submissions should be a cover letter that includes the title, word count, number of figures, name and email of each author. The cover letter should also include that the manuscript is original, not previously published, and not under consideration elsewhere.
  • Authors should name only in the accompanying cover letter and not in the manuscript to facilitate anonymous review. On the cover letter, prospective authors must also include links to any professional websites, social media accounts etc. that give scope to the sustained nature of the project(s) shared.
  • Authors will login or register on the OJS platform with name, affiliation (if applicable), and region to upload manuscripts electronically to the OJS platform. During the registration process, prospective authors will be asked to check a box if they would be willing to serve as a reviewer.
  • For accessibility purposes, all image files must be accompanied with alt-text clearly labeled for each image. This link can provide information: Alt Text Guidelines for Authors. 

Copyright Notice

  • Authors must provide proof of permission for use for ALL images submitted.
  • Authors are responsible for obtaining and providing any required copyright clearances for images, as well as for paying any usage fees. 
  • Authors will retain copyright of their submission, simultaneously licensing their works under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC 4.0). That license allows others to copy and redistribute the work so long as they provide reasonable attribution and do not use the work for a commercial purpose. This license applies to the submitted version of the work (preprint), the accepted version of the work (postprint), and the final published version.  
  • Ideal attribution for a work published in this journal consists of the work’s title, the title of the journal, the name(s) of the author(s), the DOI (digital object identifier), and a link to the CC BY-NC 4.0 license deed. The journal encourages those relying on the CC BY-NC 4.0 license to consult the Best Practices for Attribution on the Creative Commons wiki.   
  • As they retain copyright, authors are entitled to distribute any version of the article and to grant other licenses to use the work, subject to the CC BY-NC 4.0 license. The journal encourages authors to include the ideal attribution described above when they distribute their works after acceptance by the journal.   
  • Authors are encouraged to post their work online (e.g., in institutional repositories or on their website) prior to and after publication, as it can lead to productive exchanges, as well as earlier and greater citation of published work (see SPARC's "Open Access" article).
