The story of how Pennsylvania came to own the Erie Triangle involves many of the highest level state and national figures of the early republic. This small federal territory that was disputed among four states and ultimately annexed to a fifth, enjoyed a unique period in the limelight of the state and national capital, Philadelphia, while early statesmen worked out its attachment to Pennsylvania.
