The Barclay Correspondence More From the Man Who Lost the Battle of Lake Erie
Main Article Content
Abstract
The long drawn out contest for control of Lake Erie that culminated in the violent clash near Put-in-Bay on September 10, 1813 resulted in a complete victory for American Commandant Oliver Hazard Perry. That singular accomplishment, the only decisive, large scale naval action to take place on the Great Lakes during the War of 1812, won an exquisite wreath of laurels for the 28 year old Perry. He was feted and promoted, and upon his untimely death, immortalized with no end to his memorials.
