Abstract
History, Americans are taught, typically revolves around great men. George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Carnegie and Henry Ford were all intelligent, far-seeing leaders. They grasped the circumstances that surrounded them and shaped the course of American history. Although their lives were interesting and important, American history is built on more than its elites. The United States was built on the sweat and toil of its working men and women. Sadly, these are the Americans that the history books most often seem to forget.
