George Inglis Insights About the Man Who Hauled Down the British Flag at Put-In-Bay
Main Article Content
Abstract
Commander Robert Barclay, Senior Officer in His Majesty’s squadron on Lake Erie, did not surrender to the Americans. Less than half an hour before the fighting ceased, Barclay was carried below, leaving Lieutenant George Inglis, third in command aboard HMS Detroit, to give the order to strike the British ensign. Virtually nothing has ever been written about Inglis, although the record of his conduct on the Canadian lakes was almost as unenviable as the position in which he found himself on the afternoon of 10 September 1813.
