Jennie's Quilt
Main Article Content
Abstract
A horse fell on 31 year old Archibald Hooper in 1864 and while recovering, he died of neuralgia of the heart. Sarah, his wife, died later that year leaving behind three orphans. Elizabeth King, a strong woman, took in her brother's children and raised them “in the admonition of the Lord” along with her own children. Thus, Jennie Hooper and her two brothers grew up with cousin Mattie King. Together they learned their book work and Bible as they attended the Robinson Run United Presbyterian Church in Washington County, PA. The girls learned to sew clothes and quilts, make preserves and pickles and to live lives of service to the Lord and their neighbors.
