Abstract
"Gridley" became an important name in American his- tory through Capt. Charles Vernon Gridley, the hero of the Battle of Manila Bay on May 1, 1898 in the Spanish American War. Commodore George Dewey gave him the immortalized order:
"You may fire when you are ready, Gridley."
