Abstract

Nelson's 1896 Historical Reference Book of Erie County characterized Edinboro's Normal School with this phrase. To be sure, it was a humble beginning. The school we now know as Edinboro University of Pennsylvania is, by far, Erie County's oldest institution of higher education. Chartered in 1856 and opened in 1857, Edinboro has transformed itself several times over, from an academy to a state university.
