My father was good about maintaining certain friendships from his youth, and this was particularly the case with John Boyd. Colonel Boyd and my father had spent summers working together as lifeguards at the Presque Isle peninsula (now Presque Isle State Park) and shared a lifelong friendship as a result. I had the privilege of getting to know Colonel Boyd when I was a child growing up in the 60s and 70s.
