Abstract
While scholars have often cited the letters of the Reverend John Elder, housed in the archives of the Historical Society of Dauphin County, for information concerning the political atmosphere in the Pennsylvania backcountry during and immediately after the French and Indian War, few historians have taken notice of the clues that Elder's letters provide regarding the complicated nature of identity in the region.
