Western Pennsylvania History publishes articles on subjects including history, archaeology, cultural interests, sports, literature, architecture, railroading, folk art, and much more.

Peer Review Process

Submissions are subject to modification and outside review, with the editor having final approval.

Open Access Policy

Thanks to a unique partnership with Penn State University through Penn State Libraries Open Publishing, Western Pennsylvania History provides free online access to every issue of the journal published from 1918 to the year prior to the current issue. Each issue is available in a fully searchable PDF format, making it easier than ever to search for magazine articles that chronicle Western Pennsylvania history.

Journal History

Western Pennsylvania History is the region's oldest continually-published magazine, presenting scholarship for a broad audience since 1918.  It is currently published by the Senator John Heinz History Center. The journal was originally published as Western Pennsylvania Historical Magazine, and in the 1990s as Pittsburgh History.
