James Bryce: Pioneer of Pittsburgh's Glass Industry

Abstract

Scottish immigrant James Bryce (1812–1893) began his glassmaking career in 1823 at the age of 10, earning $1.25 a week as a child laborer on the floor of the well known Pittsburgh glassworks of Bakewell, Page & Bakewell. James rose from this inauspicious beginning to become one of the most prominent and innovative glassmakers of 19th century Pittsburgh.
