Coffins are one of numerous items transformed by the Industrial Revolution from a handmade/homemade article into a mass-produced commodity. Unlike similarly commoditized items—cloth, beer, and medicine, for example—the coffin’s connection to death endowed it with emotional and symbolic components that affected its evolution.
