Abstract
When Lucille Treganowan made the rounds on television and radio broadcasts such as Late Night with David Letterman, The Jon Stewart Show, NPR’s Fresh Air, and Home Improvement in the mid-1990s, national audiences were introduced to the 60-something French twist-sporting transmission specialist already well-known to many Pittsburgh car owners. With a knack for relating the principles of car mechanics in a simple and straightforward manner, she had recently earned a television show on HGTV, Lucille’s Car Care Clinic, and a book, Car Care: Everything You Need to Know from Under the Hood, published in 1996. But the burst of high-profile media attention and book deal were late arrivals in her decades-long career as a trusted mechanic, educator, and entrepreneur that had attracted curiosity from its earliest days.
