Architecture Around Us: Margaret M. Winters (1907–1979), Landscape Architect

Abstract

Pittsburgh’s extraordinary landscape shaped its history, and humans have been refining it ever since. Nowhere is this more evident than Point State Park. An earthen arrowhead pointing west at the confluence of the three rivers, Pittsburgh’s Point symbolizes the striving and conflict at the heart of not only city-building but nation-building. The park that opened on the site in 1974 accentuates the Point’s layers of history and symbolism, expressing our deep human desire for meaning in the built—and natural—environment.
