Leveling the Playing Field

Abstract

A reported 10,000 spectators lined the banks of the Monongahela River near Glenwood on July 16, 1870, to witness a challenge match in rowing. The fans, many of whom traveled by special train from Connellsville and other points outside the city, had followed the developing rivalry for weeks in the local papers. Some had packed picnic baskets, others crowded around beer tents set up for the event. Bankers and politicians jockeyed for a spot in the shade with laborers to see who would capture the gold watch and chain awarded to the champion rower that day.
