Abstract
Women often found their ability to express themselves creatively through art limited by cultural beliefs and gendered rules of behavior. Excluded from professional training in the arts and membership in organizations that supported and promoted artists, women could not sustain themselves as artists or exhibit and share their work. Some women demonstrated their skill and creativity through the production or enhancement of decorative and functional objects for home use, such as quilts, needlework, painted objects like china, and textiles.
