Academic advisers are more than advisers; they are teachers. College students “crawl” into the adviser's office and are taught how to take responsibility for their academic and career choices. They “walk” out of the adviser's office, feeling confident about the choices that they have made, and into the academic universe ready to achieve their goals. There is a chance that they may stumble and/or fall, but if the adviser teaches students the value of their decisions and education early, they will not fall often. Unlike traditional classroom teachers, the adviser teaches students university/college policies, requirements for a particular major, and the value of self-worth so that they may “run” towards a successful life. The purpose of this paper is to show how academic advisers are teachers and not just information warehouses.
