Pittsburgh Bicentennial 1816-2016: A snapshot of Pittsburgh: Looking Back at 1816 from 1916

Abstract

In 1916, Pittsburghers saw fit to mark the centennial of the incorporation by gathering small sketches about the city for a book, Pittsburgh in 1816. The slim volume was compiled by unknown authors from the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, and is structured like a written photo album, with snapshots of information to "interest the Pittsburgher of 1916 chiefly because the parts and pieces of which it is made were written by men who were living here or passed this way in 1816." To mark the bicentennial of the incorporation of Pittsburgh, it is fitting to look back on both the city's founding and its centennial year.
