Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum: High Flying Towel

Abstract

The Steelers generated lots of interest when they took on the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII. One fan, Mike Fincke, registered his support from about 240 miles away, orbiting high above the Earth in the International Space Station. Born in Pittsburgh, Colonel Fincke grew up in Emsworth and graduated from Sewickley Academy before attending MIT on an Air Force ROTC scholarship. After receiving his B.S. in Aeronautics and Astronautics, Fincke participated in a summer exchange program at the Moscow Aviation Unit where he studied Cosmonautics. He did his graduate work at Stanford, then joined the Air Force, working as a space systems engineer and training as a test pilot.
