Neighborhood Stories: Marabou and Sequins

Abstract

I knew, from the neighborhood grapevine, that Goldie Kunce had been a dancer in her day. For more than 10 years, I saw Goldie make her way from her apartment on the corner of Avery and Cedar Avenue to nearby East Ohio Street to do her shopping. She leaned lightly on a cane, dressed like a lady would in her day, straw hat and a flowered print dress, with a smile and nod for the passerby. I thought about asking her about her career, but neighbors said she was not inclined to speak of her career, one that took her from the North Side to Las Vegas, dancing all the way. When I heard that she had moved to the Vincentian Home, I went with a hunch that Goldie might want to tell her story.
