Library & Archives Treasures: Hidden City News

Abstract

The newspaper collection of the Detre Library & Archives contains more than 800 newspapers that document life in towns and neighborhoods throughout Western Pennsylvania. One of the more unusual and intereting of these is The Echo, a monthly publication written and published by the inmates of Western Penitentiary. This paper provides a unique view into prison life, chronicling programs such as important visitors and lecturers, religious services, music and entertainment performances, prison sports teams, and inmate statistics such as new prisoners, transfers, releases and escapes, and hospital admissions. Subscribers paid $1 a year. The paper ran through at least May 1930.
