African American Collection: Negro Leagues Baseball Centennial

Abstract

African Americans have been playing baseball from the beginning of the sport in the mid-19th century. Before there was a Major League, when baseball was in its earliest stage, African American players and teams were enjoying the game. Despite the desperate conditions of Black life during the late 19th century, athletic sports, especially baseball continued to grow in popularity among African Americans.
