Smithsonian Connection: Poster as Portrait

Abstract

When the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery was established in 1962, the institution initially limited its collecting activities to what was traditionally defined as “fine” art: paintings, drawings, and art prints such as engravings. But in keeping with the wider vibrancy of 20th-century visual culture, this practice changed to include mediums such as photography and graphic arts, including theatrical posters.
