Neighborhood Stories: Charlie Marks the Spot

Abstract

Charlie and Linda McCollester arrived in Pittsburgh on a Greyhound bus in 1973, in search of America. “Like the Simon and Garfunkel song, only we were coming, not leaving,” Charlie said. The war was over, they were newly married, and wanted to settle down after a trip across Africa and Europe. Their choice of Pittsburgh was reminiscent of the children’s game, Pin the Tail on the Donkey. Linda came from the Chicago area and Charlie from Rochester, New York. They wanted a midpoint. “I was in Pittsburgh once,” said Linda, so Pittsburgh it was.
