African American Collection: African Americans Saving Lives: The Freedom House Ambulance Service

Abstract

As the world suffers under the COVID-19 pandemic, the reality of the systemic crisis of health care for African Americans, who are some of the most vulnerable in our society, is revealed. This vulnerability has a history that begins in slavery and continues to the present day. Oppression and racial discrimination are remnants of a colonial system for much of the Black world, a system that deprived people of African descent basic health and human rights. The United Nations has discussed the global issue of racism during the pandemic and how the pandemic has uncovered systemic racism that denies people of color and others basic access to health services that could save their lives.
