North by Northwest: A Tornado in Sharon and a “Trip Around the World”

Abstract

Some objects tell their history simply by their existence, their beauty, or their famous maker. They command our attention and our care. Other items of material culture recount more subtle tales, particularly the familiar household goods that fill our everyday spaces. Such is the case for a quilt in Titusville, Crawford County. One of the many beautiful yet utilitarian textiles in my grandmother’s home, somewhat faded now and softened by age, its fabric tells the saga of destruction and restoration in Western Pennsylvania.
