Painting Pittsburgh's 90 Neighborhoods

Abstract

Seeing a woodcut map of Pittsburgh’s 90 neighborhoods sparked the idea. After 25 years of painting all over Western Pennsylvania, I never realized this city was divided into so many neighborhoods. The map looked like an amoeba, spreading out around the rivers with names like Esplen, New Homestead, and Fairywood. These were unfamiliar places to me, and I thought perhaps it was time to discover the city I have called home for 40 years.
