Smithsonian Connection: VOTE pants, 1970s

Abstract

Earnest pleas, lighthearted jokes, and the occasional touch of guilt all play a part in encouraging Americans to vote. Behind the seemingly innocuous reminders is a serious concern: more Americans than ever before are eligible to vote but many do not go to the polls. Some who do question whether their vote really matters. Get out the vote campaigns declare that a vote not cast can never be counted. They remind citizens of their responsibility to exercise the often hard-won right to vote and encourage all who can to be enthusiastic participants in the communal experience of voting. These flared trousers made quite a bold fashion statement and were a fun way for the wearer to spread the message of the importance of voting.
