Rauh Jewish History Program & Archives: David P. Rosenfield Papers and Photographs

Abstract

David P. Rosenfield ran an independent pharmacy for more than 30 years, first in the Hill District neighborhood of Pittsburgh and later in the suburban South Hills. His life illustrated many of the larger trends among the Jewish population in Pittsburgh during the early 20th century—educational opportunities, military service, professional accomplishments, and geographic migrations—while also reflecting his own experience as a businessman, husband, and father. The David P. Rosenfield Papers and Photographs (MSS 1242) is a rich and detailed record of one pharmaceutical career, as well as its family and communal context. It also provides useful documentation of the culture and texture of the retail pharmacy industry in Western Pennsylvania in the era before chains like CVS, Walgreens, and grocery store pharmacies became dominant.
