Italian American Collection: Beyond Bentleyville: The Impact of the Cario Family Farm

Abstract

Paula Newbaker contacted the Italian American Program in spring 2019, six months prior to the 100th anniversary of the Cario family farm in Bentleyville, Pennsylvania. She suggested I document the family’s picnic celebrating the property, now owned by Matthew and Jennifer Cario. A working farm, the property supported extended family and relations for generations. It became a launching point for Italian immigrants from the Calabrian towns of Nocera Terinese, Gizzeria, and Falerna to move into the American Rust Belt and beyond.
