North by Northwest: Johnny Appleseed: Planting the American Frontier

Abstract

Johnny Appleseed is an iconic figure of Americana, planting apple trees and civilizing the frontier in his trusty tin pan hat. Underneath this mythic mantle, however, is John Chapman, a real person who walked the paths of Western Pennsylvania. The rugged landscape of Warren County in particular prepared John Chapman physically and spiritually for his life’s work as an orchardist to the American frontier.
