Architecture Around Us: Academic By Design: Campus Architecture of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education

Abstract

The Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education is in the news for its efforts to restructure in the face of declining enrollments and budgets. The moment is opportune to reflect on the campuses of Western Pennsylvania’s public universities. Their architecture and design are the legacies of a century and a half of building for the state’s responsibility to educate students—and educators themselves.
