Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum: Title IX at 50

Abstract

Many people think of Title IX as a measure that only affects the participation of girls and women in sport, but the mandate is broader. Designed to update Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the measure reads, “No person in the United States shall, based on sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” This Education Amendment prohibits gender-based discrimination in any educational institution or by any educational program that receives federal funds.
