Walter L. Roberts, Pittsburgh’s Standout Black Architect

Abstract

The middle decades of the 20th century were a time of broad exclusion for Black Americans, and things were no different for aspiring Black architects. Among the small number who entered the profession, even fewer became licensed architects who owned and operated their own businesses. Of course, some Black architects were able to find windows of opportunity and achieved professional success. While most of their experiences and contributions remain untold, one architect stands out in Pittsburgh.
