Allegheny Arsenal Cannonballs

Abstract

On March 27, 2017, a Pittsburgh backhoe operator excavating the site of a new apartment complex at 39th and Butler Streets unearthed hundreds of Civil War-era cannonballs. Construction stopped and the contractor alerted the Pittsburgh Police Bomb Squad. Pittsburgh Department of Public Safety workers erected barriers, diverted traffic, and deployed yellow plastic police tape to keep Lawrenceville safe from the 150-year-old artillery projectiles.
