Author Guidelines

IK: Other Ways of Knowing receives manuscript submissions electronically via this site. A guide to author submissions is available at If you need further support please contact Mark Mattson (, 814-863-2480).

If you intend to submit a  manuscript please fill out the registration completely with the information you will be using as an author. If you previously registered as a reader with incomplete information, please update your registration. To ensure the integrety of the blind review, do not include author information in your manuscript file. Include only the article title on the main article.

For multiple authors. One author must be identified as the corresponding author. This individual will be responsible for receiving and responding to all communications from the editor/s.

Manuscripts should be submitted in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format. The manuscript should be double-spaced, with margins of 1 inch on all sides.

Research articles should be 5,000-15,000 words. Book reviews should be 1,500-2000 words.

Except for quotations, manuscripts should be in English.  Manuscripts in indigenous languages will be accepted if an English translation is also provided. Both versions will be published, however, copyediting services are only available for the English translation the English version will be used in assessing the manuscript.

The author(s)’ name(s) should not appear on the manuscript, since reviews are double-blind.

A manuscript submission must be an original unpublished work that has not been submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere.

The author(s) are responsible for ensuring the article does not infringe upon any copyright; violate any other right of any third parties; contain any scandalous, libelous, or unlawful matter; or make any improper invasion of the privacy of any person. Permission to use 3rd party materials e.g. figures, tables, photographs, illustrations, trade literature and data must be secured prior to publication and authors must include these permissions with their final submission. Please see further guidance on the use of 3rd party materials at the Penn State Copyright Portal.

For additional information on author rights, see the copyright notice below.

Authors must supply an abstract of not more than 150 words. No abbreviations, diagrams or reference to the manuscript’s text should be included in the abstract.

Authors should also supply a list of keywords to be used for indexing. Keyword lists should be relatively short and contain no more than 10 words or phrases.

References, citations and general style of manuscripts should follow Chicago Manual of Style 16th Author-Date system. References should be double-spaced and in alphabetical order. Footnotes should not be used, but end-notes may be located at the end and numbered consecutively. A style sheet for commonly cited materials is available HERE.

Illustrations are encouraged but not required. Color illustrations will be reproduced in color at no cost to the author.

Tables, illustrations etc. should not be embedded in the text, but should be included as separate files. A short descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend and any footnotes identified below. Figures should be labeled. Captions should be typed, double-spaced on a separate sheet.

The OJS platform allows for the inclusion of multimedia files (e.g. audio, video, etc.). Where appropriate, inclusions of these materials in author submissions are encouraged. Please provide a short descriptive title for the file and submit as supplementary materials.

Page proofs are sent to the designated author via the OJS system. They must be carefully checked and returned within 48 hours of receipt.
